This is my third year photographing little Hannah’s birthday session. She was born in December close to Christmas time, so we used to take her birthday photos in early December. As you know Kansas City winter can be freezing cold by Thanksgiving time, so we decided to move her birthday session a little earlier this year.
Hannah’s mom and I brainstormed ideas together. We tried to do something different every year as this little girl is growing up. There was a fair at Liberty at the end of September every year – Liberty Fall Fest. They have tons of fun activities such as fair food, carnival rides, and games. I suggested if we want to photograph her birthday at the carnival. Her mom agreed. We got there pretty early to shoot some close up on the street. She found a big grey dog behind a shoe repair shop’s window. She was so fascinated with that old dog and soon she found another one. Kids this age is all about exploring the world through every little corner. After that, we explored instruments from Liberty school district’s booth. They even offered her an apple and she loves apple! We kept walking and it led us to the REAL Carnival section! This is getting really exciting! Hannah always want some popcorn first. When daddy was getting her popcorn, she danced in front of the food carts. She also caught a fish and won a big hammer at a game. After the game, she went on a pirate ship, and then she rode and drove some sports cars. Finally, I asked her to stand in front of the Ferris wheel for a couple head shots. She held her tickets in front of her face. What a silly girl, but I love it. I do not ask kids to pose a lot for lifestyle sessions. Instead, I want to capture their true personality.
