Wizard of Oz Themed Family Session

November 21, 2013

I am so excited to share the story behind this themed family photo session. Kim and I met at our company’s Halloween event. Her family dressed up in Wizard of Oz characters. It was so eye-catchy that I could not resist to take a picture of her family with my point and shoot. My husband suggested to talk to her and send her the photo and I did. I am so glad that I talked to her. We connected on Facebook. It happened that she was looking for a photographer and she picked me. Since her Wizard of Oz figures are so deeply in my mind, I asked if she is interested in a themed family photo session. She said yes.

This is by far my favorite family photo session. I love shooting themed/concept work for models and actors, and also love capturing candid interaction among family members. This session is a combination of all my favorites plus the beautiful Hentges. Kim dressed up as Dorothy, her husband Matt as scarecrow, her daughter Audrey as tin girl, and her son Leo as the Cowardly Lion. Can you believe that her daughter’s name is also Audrey? She is such an elegant and smart girl and just turned 12. Leo is 5 going on 6. All of them are just too adorable in their outfits and makeup. I asked Kim how come they are so good at makeup and styling. She said that both Matt and herself had theater background and they met at their first play in high school. Both of them are still actively participating in Kansas City local theater productions, such as “Little Women” where Kim played both Beth and Jo. Even Audrey and Leo played in a production with their parents. Thus they have had lots of practice on styling and put on makeup.

We shot the session in a trail in a park. I was looking for a “yellow brick road” with flower fields on both sides, but I know this probably does not exist in reality. The yellow rock road is our new modern version of Wizard of Oz. The Hentges brought all kinds of props, such as basket, fruits, and blankets. I love working with fully prepared subjects. The lighting was so nice that day, the family is gorgeous, and the location was beautiful – everything is just perfect. I am so in love with this session.
