Photography is the art, science, and practice of creating durable images by recording light. I have always been a natural light photographer because I think it’s the most beautiful light. I have a natural light studio in my basement. It has two big bay windows, which creates soft natural light in my studio. This is where all my babies, toddlers, and small kids come for studio portraits. I use reflectors a lot in my studio sessions. Last weekend, I had an opportunity to learn studio lighting in a photographer’s grungy studio in Kansas City downtown. It is my first time experiencing studio lighting. With my mentor Jim’s guidance of setting up studio lights, I got lots of great shots of my model friend Staci. Staci and I talked before the...
This is my first newborn session taken place outside of my studio. I had a couple newborn pose designed for the outdoor newborn session. It was taken place in my backyard, where filled with greens. Baby Daniel arrived with full a tummy, but he was still awake. I guess it takes time for a newborn baby to adjust to a new environment and fall asleep, so mommy Nancy fed him to help him fall asleep. Guess what happened next? Baby Daniel has super high metabolism and digested his food right away! After that he was hungry again, so mommy had to feed him again. It took us more than one to rock him back to sleep again and he was asleep for 3 minutes. We quickly put him down in...
I have been waiting to photograph this lifestyle newborn session for months and it finally happened last week! The Colons (Nancy and Willie) were expecting their baby and they would like me to capture the magic moments of their baby’s first a few days. Since this would be the 4th and the final baby in the Colon family, we did a lifestyle session in hospital within 48 hours the baby is born. Nancy let me know she had a baby boy on Monday and I went to Liberty Hospital on Tuesday night for the lifestyle baby’s first 48 hours session. Baby Daniel is such a solid big boy weighed at 8lb 9oz at birth. During the time I was in the birthing center, he was so obedient. I could tell...
Are you a wild animal lover? You will enjoy this post if you are! We always have robins coming to build nest under our deck every spring. Three weeks ago, we found a baby robin fell out of the nest in our backyard, so we put the baby bird back in the nest. After a few minutes, all her siblings and parents flew away. This poor little thing tried to fly too, but fell out of the nest again. We decided to take her in. My husband has such a tender heart. He has been feeding the baby bird and training her how to fly. We took her to our backyard and tried to set her free one time, but she didn’t want to go. She wouldn’t even move when we...
Remember that cute little boy Asher? This time I get to shoot for Asher’s family photos in their front and backyard. Asher is so cooperative this time as this would be the third official time of him posing in front of my camera. I guess it really helps when that little person knows me – the candy camera lady. I can’t compliment enough of how beautiful this little family is. The session went very smooth except I got a few poisonous bug bites… It’s worth it though because I captured the true personality of Asher and his nature interaction with his parents. I look forward to work with Asher’s family in the near future.
It’s been a crazy month for me. I took a business trip to Vancouver, BC at the beginning of this month and it is the first time I left my babies after they are born. My day job has been keep me extremely busy lately and I haven’t had much time to focus on photography. I just don’t want to miss this month’s project 10×12, so I still shot photos of my growing little girl. If you are my facebook friends, you probably saw a baby robin adopted us. She fell from the nest. We put her back, but she fell again. All her siblings and parents flew away, so we took her in. She’s been living with us for a week now. We’ve been feeding her bread and water....
I did a little cheating this month for Project 10×12 because I took Audrey and Wesley to an actual photo session – May Day Play Date Session! This was one of the most wonderful photo experience. My kids get to play with other kids in a photo shoot. They won’t be crying when they see me taking pictures of others while they couldn’t join. One of my photographer friends called this play date photo session”Lifestyle at its finest!” It wasn’t an easy job though. I sweated all over after chasing 8 toddlers around after 2 hours. Most of Audrey and Wesley’s photos I snapped are totally candid because I had to focus on photographing other kids. While other kids were taking breaks or playing with each other, I could take...
This is my first time shoot a group of kids all together in one session. Thanks Tegan Marasco for this great idea! This photo session is like a series mini sessions happening at the same time. It was my pleasure to take both candid shots and posed portraits for these beautiful kids. We started the session with the kids playing at the swing sets. Kids all love the slides. After warming up a little, I started pulling individual child to take some posed photos in Tegan’s backyard. Guess what I found? Purple wild flowers! It was a big surprise to me. I have been looking for wild flower fields around the area but had no luck! These beautiful wild flowers rocked this play date session!
Every family has its story and this family is so special in many ways. There’re just so many stories in this 21 people big family. Invited by my family physician Dr. Christine Nedeau, I had the honor to take family pictures for Dr. Iway’s family in their beautiful home. Dr. Nedeau is the second daughter of the Iway family. She and her sister Dr. Yvonne Spurlock, brother Dr. Edsel Iway and little sister Steph are very close together. She said their family is a tight-knit. The family is led by their father Dr. Belino Iway who just celebrated his 71st birthday That was a big deal because he is a kidney dialysis patient and is waiting for a transplant right now. He was forced to retire from his practice. The mom, Dr. Olivia Iway,...
April is one of my favorite month. Simple because I was born in the last day of April. It’s been a great month for my photography career, but I want to stay personal on the 10×12 project, so I will only share 10 candid photos of my little family. The kids are growing up so fast and I don’t want to miss documenting any of their development milestones. I took them out to play in front of our house in a warm afternoon. It just happened that daddy and Audrey were wearing matching outfit. Even Wesley was wearing an outfit in the same color shades. I wasn’t even planning on taking pictures that day, but these are good examples of matching outfits for a family photo shoot. Check out...
